Tools are important in any task. Ginghers make the best shears I've ever used. I'd recommend them to anyone. They make a true left hand scissors, too. |

As far as Rotary Mats go, you need one that is self-healing. The color or type is up to you. I prefer the Dritz Duraheal mat. The gold grid lines are easy to see against the royal blue mat.

I use the 24" X 36" mat at home and the 18" X 24" mat for class. It's easy to transport in my bag and still large enough to use without having to fold the fabric a second time.

Rotary cutters are another matter of preference. I have used several kinds and many of them seem to have their own benefits. The one thing I always look for in a cutter is a safety feature that is easy to use. IT'S A MUST!

Omnigrid rulers are my favorites! They seem to have the largest selection and they are easy to read whether cutting dark or light fabrics.

I've listed what I believe to be the four most important rulers for your quilting first. This by no means is all you'll need but it is a good place to start. The others are nice to have; each serves a good purpose.

The Omnigrid #96 and #98 that follows can be used to cut your half-square-triangles from the same strip that you cut your squares. It's used in the quilt pattern "Stars & Patience". It's easy to use and the pattern illustrations teach you. You'll use it more than you had imagined. It's one of my favorite tools! STARS & PATIENCE PATTERN
